Arthritis in Munchkins

Arthritis can develop in Munchkins, particularly as they age or secondary to other joint conditions. Despite their small size, Munchkins can experience significant discomfort from degenerative joint disease, especially if they carry excess weight or have a history of joint injuries.

Prevalence

Common in senior individuals

Typical Onset

8-12 years

Severity

Moderate

Symptoms to Watch For

If your Munchkin shows any of these signs, monitor closely and consult your veterinarian.

stiffness after rest that improves with movement
reluctance to climb stairs or jump onto furniture
decreased activity and playfulness
limping or favoring one or more legs
difficulty getting up from lying down
behavioral changes such as irritability when touched

Risk Factors

  • advancing age
  • prior joint injury or surgery
  • joint laxity or prior luxation
  • obesity or overweight condition
  • secondary to dysplasia or other orthopedic conditions

Diagnosis

Diagnosed through physical examination (joint palpation, range of motion testing) and radiographs showing joint space narrowing, bone spurs, and subchondral sclerosis. Blood work rules out inflammatory arthritis. Joint fluid analysis may be performed if infection is suspected.

Treatment

Multimodal approach: NSAIDs for pain and inflammation, joint supplements (glucosamine, chondroitin, omega-3 fatty acids), weight management, physical rehabilitation (hydrotherapy, laser therapy), acupuncture. Librela (anti-nerve growth factor antibody) provides monthly injectable pain relief. Adequan injections support cartilage health.

Prevention

Maintain lean body weight throughout life — the single most impactful intervention. Provide regular moderate exercise. Start joint supplements early in predisposed breeds. Address joint injuries promptly. Provide orthopedic bedding and non-slip flooring.

When to See a Vet

See your vet if your pet is slowing down, struggling with stairs, or seems stiff after naps. Arthritis is progressive — early treatment preserves mobility and quality of life. Pain management should not be delayed.
