Progressive Retinal Atrophy in Tibetan Terriers
Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) is a documented concern in Tibetan Terriers, causing the gradual degeneration of the retina's photoreceptor cells. Tibetan Terriers with PRA typically show night blindness first, progressing over months to years to complete blindness. DNA testing is available for the breed-specific PRA mutations affecting Tibetan Terriers, making it possible to identify carriers before breeding.
Prevalence
Documented breed predisposition — varies by line
Typical Onset
3-5 years (early-onset forms) or 6-8 years (late-onset)
Severity
Severe
Symptoms to Watch For
If your Tibetan Terrier shows any of these signs, monitor closely and consult your veterinarian.
Risk Factors
- •autosomal recessive inheritance in most breeds
- •carrier-to-carrier breeding
- •lack of DNA testing in breeding program
- •specific PRA gene variants identified in the breed
Diagnosis
Ophthalmoscopic examination reveals retinal changes (vascular attenuation, tapetal hyperreflectivity, optic disc pallor). Electroretinogram (ERG) detects retinal dysfunction before visible changes appear. DNA testing is available for many breed-specific PRA mutations (e.g., prcd-PRA, rcd1, rcd3). DNA test before breeding is the standard of care.
Treatment
No cure exists — PRA is a progressive inherited condition leading to blindness. Antioxidant supplementation (Ocu-GLO) may slow progression. Environmental management: maintain consistent furniture arrangement, use scent markers, keep pathways clear. Most dogs adapt remarkably well to blindness with a supportive home environment.
Prevention
DNA testing of breeding stock is the primary prevention. Never breed carriers to carriers. Annual CERF/OFA eye exams detect early retinal changes. Buy puppies only from breeders who test for breed-relevant PRA mutations.
When to See a Vet
See your vet if your dog seems hesitant in dim light, bumps into things at dusk, or you notice increased eyeshine in photos. Early diagnosis allows planning and environmental modifications before significant vision loss.
